What’s So Good About a Sand Free Beach Towel?

If you’ve searched online for a new beach towel, you’ve likely come across the term “sand free towel”. It’s the buzzword for a microfibre beach towel or travel towel — and for good reason.

While most people are familiar with microfibre cleaning cloths (known for their non-abrasive texture and dirt-grabbing qualities), fewer know how this textile performs outside the kitchen. In recent years, microfibre has exploded across apparel and homewares — but not all microfibre is created equal.

Premium Microfibre 101

The highest quality microfibre fabric is a blend of polyester and polyamide (nylon), typically in ratios of 80:20 or 70:30. Polyester provides structure, while polyamide adds density and absorption.

Premium microfibre is “split”— each fibre fanned into many micro strands, often five times thinner than a human hair. This creates a greater surface area, making the fabric significantly more absorbent and denser than cotton. In fact, microfibre can hold up to seven times its weight in water without dripping.

Microfibre textiles come in a variety of weaves and thicknesses, measured in grams per square metre (GSM). The higher the GSM, the thicker and heavier the fabric.

Buyer Tip: Avoid 100% polyester microfibre — it lacks softness and absorbency. If fibre content isn’t listed, you’re likely buying an inferior product.
